Want vs. Need

Today a friend of mine said to me in an e-mail "DVD's are so yesterday." He's what I like to call a "quality snob." According to my own definition, a quality snob is "someone who fails to fully enjoy something simply because they know that it also exists in a higher quality form that for some reason they cannot experience." But in addition to being a quality snob, he's also right. DVD is kinda yesterday. They've come out with something better. Actually, they've come out with two something betters: Blu-ray and HD DVD media. So go ahead and take a look at your DVD collection. Go ahead. Look it over nice and good, and let it sink in that DVD quality is no longer the highest quality video that exists today. Go ahead, let it sink in nice and good. Your movie collection is now obsolete.

So how does that make you feel? Jealous? Inferior? Like you wasted money on a dying technology? Do you feel like tossing out all your DVD's and replacing them with the lastest and greatest simply because you don't like the idea of settling for second best? It may sound rash, but think about this: did you or anyone you know do pretty much the same thing about 8 years ago when you gave up VHS tapes for DVD's?

Exactly. So what gives? Why are we all so friggin' obsessed with the best? Why is it so damn hard for us to live with things that are anything less than what we know to be the latest and greatest? It's like we're all striving to have and to be the #1, but we've never stopped to ask ourselves what the hell is so damn wrong with having or being the #2?

What about your car? I'm sure none of you reading this own the highest quality car in the world, so how does that make you feel? Inadequte? Not good enough? Just totally turned off by your stupid inferior car that, while it runs perfectly fine, is nothing but a piece of shit because it's not the best that current technology can manufacture?

What about money? Look inside your wallet. I bet all the bills in there are crinkled, torn, ripped, written on, or imperfect in some manor. And what of your coins? I bet they're mostly dinged up and scratch to hell. How does that make you feel? Does it make you feel like not even spending it, because what's the point in handling money that is of a second rate quality? Does it make you feel like running to a bank and exchanging your subpar cash for hot-off-the-press bills and mint condition coins?

What about food? Think about what you ate for dinner the past few nights. Did you eat the highest quality food? Probably not. Does that make you mad? Depressed? Feel somewhat inadequte because you know that better food exists in the world and you're just not cool enough to be eating it?

Do you have kids? If you do, are they the smartest? The prettiest? The best behaved? The best at sports? I highly doubt it. Does realizing this mean you don't like your kids as much as you use to? And what if your kid becomes disabled or gets a disease like cancer? Does it make you wish you had someone elses kid instead because yours is not of the highest quality that there is in the world?

Look, all I want is for people to think about it. Think about what the hell is so bad about being #2. Look at yourself, your life, and the things you have. Just because Joe Schmoe down the street has something better doesn't mean you need to have it too. I believe one of the worst tricks our minds can play on us is turning all of our wants into needs and then taking everything away and leaving us empty inside by eliminating the one area we invested all of our heart and soul into; our needs. Realize that there are things you want and things you need, and you should always be aware of the difference. If you are a good, happy person at heart, then there's nothing wrong with who you are, what you like, settling for second best, or the DVD's you currently own. And I promise, if you take care of your DVD's they'll still work fine in 20 years. Hell, they'll probably look even better than you remember because your vision will have gotten that much worse. That is all. Later,

 Kyle
