Tuesday May 29, 2007 (09:34am) The Sasquatch (while listening to The Beginning Of The End by Nine Inch Nails) Well, this last weekend was the Sasquatch Festival, and boy was it a crazy weekend. I almost don't know where to start. Let's try the beginning. -First, Karly and I went down to Portland on Friday morning. I met up with Casey around 3pm and she headed over tio Melody's. I started reinstalling Windows on Casey's PC, but before I could completely finish with it, we were off to the movies to watch the new Pirates movie. I thought it was only ok. Slightly better than Spiderman 3. After that it was back to Casey's where I finished working on his PC and we all played some Sing Star on the PS2. I blew everyone away with my rapping skills on DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince's Summertime. They said it was too hard but I showed 'em! Meanwhile, back to Casey's PC, everything was going smooth until the program MusicMatch wouldn't work on his PC. Before I knew it, it was 1am, and we had to go to bed. We all woke up around 5am, got ready, and headed out ASAP. We got to the Gorge around 11:30am. That's when things started to get crazy. First, I was worried about rain, but it was really sunny and really hot. I didn't mean to bring my umbrella, but I used it as a parasol and was glad to have it. Also, at the gate, I was forced to throw away a small pocket knife and a pair of nail clippers on my key chain. It was lame. Once inside, we all found the prices of everything to be completely ridiculous. One beer was $10, the same price as a small cheese pizza and a pack of smokes. And a small bottle of water was $4. Luckily, we brought in a bunch of unopened water bottles and snacks, which was cool. I only really paid for one actually meal, which was both hard on my wallet and stomach. $7 for a hamburger that tasted like it had already been eaten. They had a few games around which were almost cool. They had a baseball pitching booth that was free and told you how fast you pitched. I tried it, but since I have no follow through, I could only muster a weak 48mph. Casey tried the batting cage and won a free hat. They also had a basketball hoop, but you had to pay $1 for one shot. I tried it once and airballed. Later on in the day they had something called "Extremely Weird Wrestling". We decided to check it out, but it we only lasted a few minutes before moving on. It was pretty stupid. But then there was the music. I was hoping to discover new bands, but I didn't. They mostly sucked. The first non-sucky band was Beastie Boys, but it was only them doing new instrumental stuff and none of their classics. The only good performances were by The Arcade Fire and Bjork. And the lame thing was that by the time they were on stage (Aracade fire started around 10pm, Bjork around midnight) I was so tired and sore that I spent most of their sets on the ground lying down. It was lame, but still cool to be there for their music. After Bjork ended around 1:15am, we started making our way to the car. We arrived at the car around 2am. We didn't get back to the hotel and asleep until after 3am. Then we all woke up around 9am and headed back to Portland. I finally got MusicMatch working on Casey's PC, which he really liked. After that, I met up with Karly around 5pm and then we headed back to Renton. All in all, the weekend was a big to-do that at times didn't seem worth the trouble, but I did enjoy spending time with friends and getting to see Bjork. And that's always cool. -There's two more stories to tell about the trip. The first is that we got to see Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel in person at the Festival. Sarah was a host for one of the stages, and Jimmy was there because he's going out with Sarah. Anyway, I love Sarah Silverman, and would have loved to meet her. And I had the perfect chance, as she walked right by us and made a "ahh..." sound when she saw Violet, Casey and Cassy's daughter. I wasn't really paying attention, as I was tired and sore, and before I knew it Sarah walked right by me and was gone before I had the chance to say something. I thought of hobbling after her, but I didn't want to be that guy. Had I been more alert I would have loved to stop and chat with her. But I didn't. It was just another one of those missed opportunities. And afterwards, of course, all I could think of were all these really cool things to say to her and Jimmy. But it was all for naught. The next story of interest is that, on the trip back to Portland from the Gorge, on I-82 around exit 25, there was a large fire on the side of the road that was obviously out of control and threatening several houses and other property. So, I called 911 and reported it. The operator said that it had already been reported, but she thanked me for reporting it as most people who saw it probably figured "someone else will report it". It sucked that the fire was out of control, but I felt good for doing what I could at the time. And that's pretty much all there is to tell about the trip. So there you go. Later, Kyle
