Saturday May 30, 2009 (11:26am) A Weekend's Worth Of Welcomed Whimsical Wonder (while watching Friends on TV) This last weekend was pretty awesome. I went to Portland to visit my friends Casey and Cassy, who were down from Alaska, and see Nine Inch Nails perform what very well may be their last tour. But the weekend turned out to be much more exciting than originally planned. I got into town on Friday and hung out with Roldog at his new house in Clackamas, which is pretty cool. We played in his back yard with his kids and played on his Wii (I love that bowling game!) Also, we were able to watch LeBron James sink a last-second shot to beat the Magic, which was awesome. The next day Roldog's mom took Jason, his kids, and I out to The Oregon Zoo, where I was able to see such wonderous beasts as a polar bear, an incredibly large snake, and a couple of human douchebags who like the Denver Broncos to the point of wearing their merchandise in public (talk about scary!). After grabbing lunch at a Mexican restaurant (thanks Desire!) we headed back to Roldog's and I waited for Casey & Cassy to get into town from Alaska. Around 4:30pm they finally arrived at Roldog's to pick me up and we headed over to Cassy's sisters for a barbeque. We stayed there for a few hours and then Casey, Luke, and I headed over to McKenzie's house for some nerdy fun. We played Rock Band, Magic: The Gathering, ate pizza, discussed our opinions of classic 80's rock (who doesn't like Journey? C'MON), and debated the importance of classic childhood movies (who doesn't like The NeverEnding Story? C'MON!). After this Casey, Luke, and I headed back to Luke's for a quick nights sleep and the following morning we headed out to the main event of the weekend: to see Nine Inch Nails live at The Gorge, Trent's favorite place to perform (he said so himself at the show). The trip to The Gorge was uneventful, save the fact that Luke was able to catch some rest in the back seat. Casey and I just listened to music (mostly NIN, of cource) and chatted about the wonders that make our lives so magical (music, movies, books, girls, farting, etc). We got to The Gorge around 3pm. The Gorge was rather hot and crowded but we were able to find a shady place to hang out, so we mainly stayed there until NIN was about to come on. Around 8pm, after several sound checks and false alarms, Trent finally took the stage. And before we knew it the show was underway. NIN's performance was awesome. Trent was definately more into this show than the last time I saw him. He also seemed to have so computer equipment on stage that I had never seen before, which helped him create the studio sounds we hear in his albums on stage live, which was cool. It was the second best out of the four times I've seen NIN in concert, only topped by the first time I saw NIN at the Gorge (Casey also argeed). Here are my top 5 favorite songs from the set list: -Wish -1,000,000 -The Becoming -Gave Up -Hurt (The last song) After NIN was finished around 9:30pm we decided to leave and not stay for Jane's Addiction, so we could get a head start on the ride home. Since Luke slept on the ride down, he drove the entire way home while Casey and I tried to rest. Things were going well until Luke realized that he had went the wrong way and was actually heading towards Idaho. He turned around and started going the right way but his little detour added about an hour and a half to our journey home. We got back to Luke's place around 5am and crashed immediately. The next day, Monday, was the day I was suppose to head back home but everyone else was heading to the beach that day. So, since I didn't NEED to be home that day for school, I called up Amtrak to see if I could reschedule my train ticket for Tuesday instead. They said it was no problem and I actually got money back because it was cheaper to travel on Tuesday (Sweet!). So, we all loaded up in the car again and headed out to Cannon Beach. I had not been to the beach in a long time so this was a rather cool twist to the trip. Casey & Cassy had a two bedroom cottage on the beach so there was plently of room for all of us. We hung out on the beach for a bit (I finally got to use my OHSU cancer frisbee, which worked rather well in the beach winds) and then headed to the store to buy some dinner which we would cook on a beach fire. After dinner we were all pretty tired so we didn't stay up for that much longer and crashed kinda early. The next morning we woke up and Casey & Cassy cooked us a good breakfast that we all ate together. Then we all took one more walk on the beach before it was time for Luke and I to leave. Luke drove back to Portland and dropped me off at the train station downtown and that was pretty much the end of my trip. I got home Tuesday night and immediately had to start working on school, which I've been catching up on ever since. The trip, as cool as it was, did take it's toll on my body. My joints are sore, my legs and back are sore, and my whole body just feels achy. Also, I ate crap food most of the trip and my system made me pay for it. But the trip was so awesome that I would totally do it again. Of course, if I had it my way it would have been about 10 degree cooler, the sun would be hiding behind some clouds, and I would always have a pack mule carrying a myriad of assorted pillows and cushions so I'd always be comfortable. Later, Kyle P.S. I made a funny this weekend that I wanted to share with the world. Casey farted inside the truck on the way home from the show and I said “It's a 'Party Foul' from my 'Farty Pal'!”. It was awesome. The joke, I mean. Not Casey's fart. It smelled like ass.
